Ford started testing the new Figo hatchback and compact sedan on Indian roads recently. These models were spied numerous times before and the hatchback was sighted again. This time, however, an automatic version was seen on test.
The spyshot of the interior shows the gear stick which looks similar to the one in the EcoSport. It gets the 'S' mode as well, apart from the 'P', 'R', 'N' and 'D' modes. The automatic version of the EcoSport gets a six-speed automatic transmission, but only for the petrol version. It would be interesting to see if the same double clutch transmission (DCT) is offered in the new Figo, as it will then make the Figo the cheapest car to be equipped with a DCT.
The engine options for the Brazilian Ford Ka are different from the set of engines of the Figo hatchback for the Indian market. The India-bound version's engine line-up is expected to include a 1.2-litre petrol mill and a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel motor. So now, apart from a five-speed manual, there will also be an automatic variant.
Coming to the appearance of the new Ford Figo hatchback, its design was showcased with the unveiling of the Figo compact sedan concept at the 2014 Auto Expo. The manufacturer has retained the primary design of the concept that features the trademark trapezoidal grille. Though the LED headlamps and tail lamps will be replaced by multi-reflector ones, the overall shape has been retained.
The cabin will be equipped with a whole lot of new features including Ford’s SYNC system and a device dock to mount and charge mobile phones, MP3 players and GPS systems. This system was shown in the concept car at the Expo and will be integrated with the infotainment system on board.
This new Figo hatchback will serve as a replacement to the Figo on sale at present in our country and might be launched in September this year. The model might be priced in the range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh and will go up against the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 and Tata Bolt.
