CarWale Comparison: Hyundai Grand i10 vs. Maruti Suzuki Swift vs. Ford Figo

It the clash of the (small) titans, the extremely successful Maruti Suzuki Swift, the all guns blazing Ford Figo and the new kid on the block with the extremely sharp blade, the Hyundai Grand i10. Each car boasts of a successful legacy (of varying time frames) and deserves a place on the top step of the B-Segment podium but only one can sit on the top. So which one is it? Read on to find out.

The new kid on the block gets the newest diesel mill. The Hyundai Grand i10 is powered by a three cylinder 1.1-litre diesel engine that produces 71PS and 159Nm of torque while the Ford Figo diesel is powered by a 1.4-litre engine that produces 70PS and 160Nm of torque. The Maruti Suzuki Swift gets the omnipresent 1.3-litre multijet diesel that spits out 74PS and 190Nm of torque. The petrol engines are pretty much the same in terms of capacity but vary in output. They get 1.2-litre four-cylinder engines – the power ratings of the Swift are 85PS and 114Nm, 72PS and 102Nm in the Figo and 83PS and 114Nm in the Grand i10. All of them use of a five-speed manual to transmit power to the front wheels. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Hyundai Grand i10 diesel has the smallest engine so it has the highest ARAI fuel efficiency of 24kmpl. The Swift comes in second with an ARAI efficiency of 22.9kmpl while the Figo has a ARAI figure of 20kmpl.  

All three cars are matched evenly in terms of length and wheelbase with only a marginal difference between the Swift and the other two cars. The seems that the Swift offers a bit space for the rear passegners, however the Grand and Figo hit back with 280 litres of boot space compared to meagre 205 litres in the Swift.

Being a Hyundai the Grand i10 scores majorly over its rivals in terms of features. When comparing the top-spec ZXI diesel Figo, ZDi Swift and the Grand i10 Asta diesel, we can see that it (Grand i10) scores over the Figo and Swift in terms of keyless start, rear AC vents, rear parking sensors, two 12Volt power outlets, leather wrapped steering wheel, electrically adjustable and retractable OVRMs. However Hyundai has been a miser on the safety front – the ABS and airbags are an optional extra even on the top-end variants and the front-seat headrest are integrated (not adjustable) even on the top-end Asta variant. 

The Grand i10 slots between the Figo and the Swift. While the Figo is the least expensive at less than Rs 6.18 lakh (ex-Delhi), it is relatively smaller than the other two. The Grand undercuts the Swift by a decent margin (close to Rs 45,000), but safety features like the ABS or airbags are optional extras even on the top-end variant.
