A compact hatchback from Ford has been spotted testing in Europe and this is likely to be the 2014 Figo (codenamed B562). We had earlier carried a story based on a speculative rendering by Car and Driver Brazil of the 2014 Figo and this test mule seems to have similar features as the rendering. The 2014 Ford Figo will be the American automaker’s first vehicles to roll out of their upcoming plant in Sanand in Gujarat.
The pictures show us that the new car is expected to be longer and slightly wider than the current car, a trend that lot of manufacturers seem to following these days. It is expected to carry forward many of the design cues from the recently launched EcoSport (based on the Ford’s Kinetic language). It loses the Christmas tree headlights at the back but gets sharper lines all over. The car is also expected to spawn a compact sedan that will rival cars like the Honda Amaze and the Tata Indigo eCS. It is expected to replace the Ford Classic and will bridge the gap between the Figo and the Fiesta.
There is also a possibility that this vehicle could be developed as part of the Blue Oval’s ‘One Ford’ plan. This is essentially a plan that sees Ford sell the same cars in all of its markets with a similar kind of engine line up and feature list. The vehicles currently in this list include the EcoSport, Fiesta, B-Max MPV and the Kuga crossover.
In terms of engines, it is expected to get the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine as well as both the 1.5-litre mills currently powering the Fiesta sedan. We believe that the Ecoboost engine in the 2014 Figo will be without a turbocharger (to reduce costs) but will have an output to match its segment rivals.
The Figo has been a major success for the American automaker after the Ikon sedan and now with the EcoSport poised to take the limelight, it only seems logical for Ford to update the Figo with a modern design. However, this development is expected to be at least a year away as Ford will want the EcoSport to have its moment in the sun for at least 8-9 months.
