Exterior "A tough macho exterior with military grade construction, Turbocharged intercooled 2500 cc NEF Crde diesel engine churning out 105 horse power and 240Nm of torque with a 4 wheel drive (Advanced Borg Warner transfer case) which could climb a wall.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) The Thar has the promise of bringing an "adventure experience" to customers at an affordable price point. The only real competition to this Mahindra is from the Gypsy. But then, the Gypsy doesn't offer a diesel engine, power steering or decent ride quality. Mahindra is casting the net rather wide in terms of the potential market for this enigmatic 4x4. The target segment includes.
1) Offroaders who couldn't buy a new Jeep earlier.
2) Those who want a suv which does well both offroad and on the highway.
3) Those who need a rugged workhorse for farms, bad roads and jungle trails.
4) Youth who dream of a lifestyle vehicle.
5) Adventurous folk who need a seperate car for weekend trips.
6) Those whose first crush was a Jeep.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox On the highway, the Thar can eat tarmac whole day long without complaining. Yes, you can even cruise at 3 digit speeds for hours on end.
Ride Quality & Handling It is city driving, highway runs & bad road conditions that this vehicle truly excels in, it puts a wide grin on your face. It is an extremely powerful, rattle free, vibration free, silent Jeep on the road.
Final Words A great buy, an excellent ride but only after loads of modifications.
Areas of improvement NA.

Prior to the purchase of Mahindra Thar DI 2WD we had a MM 540 95 Model. We bought it as a used vehicle in 2011 and used it for 2 years. After we bought it we repainted it and used it for some time. It was comming up with some problems and the process of taking it to the local mechanic shop was really a paining one. The primiary usage is for going to our estate and for taking things from there. besides i use the jeep in the week ends. as the visit to the local mechanic became a routine job for my father, we then decided to sell it off and buy a new one so that we can able to use it for a long term basis. Finally we sold the MM 540 '95 Model for 1.30 L. Seems to be a better price. We had already shortlisted Thar DI 2WD and i had a another thought if we can go in for Force Gurkha. But when i discussed it with my friends, they said the A.S.S of Force Motors is not available in our area and it would be problem. So i cancelled it and went for Thar. I did not consider going in for 4WD as the 2WD is meeting all out requirement of use. We booked the Thar in Kodai Automobiles in Tirunelveli, TN. The sales advisor told us that they need to bring the vehicle from Hosur, it may take 10 days at the max. So in the mean time we planned to get loan from ICICI Bank.
The guy who was responsible for the Loan in ICICI was telling us to bring hell a lot of documents and we gave it to him and he was telling us to bring another documents for loan processing. I really got fedup with him and proceeded to Royal Sundaram. The useless formalities in ICICI made me to go in for Royal Sundaram and the process took 2 days for approval.Where as in ICICI it was 10 days and counting.
My Father went to collect the vehicle for the delivery in Kodai Automobiles and every thing was simple and smooth. Finally a new baby is back to my home. Manza, Figo are the other.
Our primary purpose is for the usage in our estate and may be use it for our personal travel too.
I had a driven it in the week end. Would say it is far far better than the earlier 540.

Exterior Imposing stature , others - Okay , nothing much nothing less
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Comfortable for the front seats , Punishment for the rear seat occupants . Very basic interiors.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox 0-100 kmph in just 13 secs , great perfomance , great offroad abilities , but unstable over 80kmph. fuel economy is okay for a large size low RPM engine.Old fashioned gearbox , gets stuck in reverse gear in 50% of time.
Ride Quality & Handling Okay for the front seaters , punishment for the back seaters ( as it has leaf springs in the rear suspension. Unstable over 80kmph. It is not made for three digit speedo readings.
Final Words: Value for money for proper off roading enthusiasts , which other fancy "SUV" can not deliver.
Areas of improvement Most required - Airconditioner ( which is available now ) & four point seat belts.

Exterior Looks nice... Bumpers are not strong enough...Soft top is noisy if you rise the spped over 60kmph overall good exteriors...
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Seats are fine. driver seat is not exactly straight to the steering... Very poor quality plastic used for dashboard. no place to keep something safe inside(no hard-top too) Space is OK. Driving comfort is very good.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Very good. Fuel economy above 12kmpl, it is fine. Gearbox is little bit hard for 1-4 gears. But you will always love to to shift it to 5th, it is really smooth.
Ride Quality & Handling Very good handling. and ride quality. Feel like driving SUV on highways or similar quality roads. The soft top makes sound if you drive above 60 KMPH due to wind.
Final Words I m happy after driving for 1 and half years 50000 kms. (Non AC version). Now it is too much money for the AC versions. (over 8 lakhs).
Areas of improvement Dashboard quality, Hardtop variant, Doors mechanism, safety.
