Long Term Review - First Report
A lot’s lying on the shoulders of Tata’s little Tiago. It is big on character and is the brand’s full-hearted effort to give the consumer a well-rounded package. You’d agree too that it carries a welcome change from the usual design language from this car maker. With stellar pricing and profound packaging, it should only be a matter of time when the Tiago’s potential is acknowledged by the masses. So to gauge the best of its behaviour our youngest entrant in the fleet of long termers is the diesel Tiago. Over the next four months we will put it to task and you can expect some reliable views on how this car fares first hand.
I admit it. I wasn’t exactly excited about getting the Tiago in the first place, but a few minutes of acclimatisation was all it took for me to rejig my thoughts. Tata’s all new Tiago is actually a very well rounded product, and in its diesel form, hardly makes a buzz. It’s got a 1.0-litre Revotorq motor that makes 69bhp and 140Nm of torque. And that’s enough torque to get you going for even more than a regular commute.
The interior lines is swell deviation from the brand’s model bin till date. Build quality too is an ‘unseen’ in this segment, and the choice of materials used in the cabin is quite fresh while lending a nice feel. The current summer holidays mean frequent picks and drops to the children’s outdoor games arena, and the little Tiago doubled up just fine. Kids, their guardians, both of their tantrums and the resultant game equipment were taken head-on in the stride. Everyone appreciated the efficient cooling offered by the air-con, the seats and also the space available to carry the equipment. Our first round of tests confirmed that the Tiago returned 15.48kpl in the city and 18.27kpl on the highway to a litre of diesel.
The entry of the Tiago into our long term fleet couldn’t have been better timed too. With the crackling of the darker shade of clouds, the onset of the monsoons is markedly just a matter of days now, and I was on the lookout for an alternative to my motorcycle. Interestingly, everyone at the workplace wants to know about this hatch. And, also wants a go at the keys! More on this in the days to come..
