I have always admired Safari's great looks for a few years now but it was after the recent drop in prices (approx. 1.5 lacs in June '06) and a desire to move onto diesel (lower running costs + cleaner burning fuel) and SUV (don’t need one when I am 60) that I took a closer look at this vehicle. Only the Indian SUVs came close to my already stretched budget! And a natural first choice based purely on looks put the Safari ahead of the Scorpio. A decent test drive (Concorde, Bangalore – friendly and not pushy at all) and I am ready to share my experience. The drive itself was OK - I need to get used to diesel (currently have a Hyundai Accent petrol) and it's vibration and sluggishness. I also need to get used to the space inside - it is huge, however the quality of interiors was a little disappointing - the plastic used was cheap molded type, clearly lacking in quality. Same with the upholstery fabric - very cheap quality, must replace types. The braking was fine except for the fact that the vehicle seemed to pull a shade towards the left. The other odd issue was with the sound the power steering made when making an U-turn. Rear seat riders (wife and daughter) enjoyed the quick cooling from the overhead AC, felt secure in spite of the rocking and swaying on short stretches of rough roads. The only other disappointment was the lack of airbags in the EX variant. My research from the Internet and talking to friends leads me to suspect about poor service, lack of readily available parts - but I am still leaning towards getting one and believe that it is fair value for money, amazing space, and a sure head turner of a car.
Epilogue: I finally got my black Safari EX in '06 and am glad I did.

I purchased Safari Dicor on 04th May 2010 at Auto Industries, Goa registered as GA09/A3843
My first long drive on 8th May 2010 turned into a disaster when i was around 150kms from my town as the entire electrical system failed and car went dead. Luckily engine was idling when this happened.
After struggling for 2hrs with dealers 24 hrs helpline(TATA MOTORS 24 hrs helpline wass not accessible), i myself found out it was due to a blown out fuse and replaced it. But the fuse went off again when trying to just insert the ignition key, This happened repetatively. Finally managed to get a local mechanic(as recomended by Dealers helpline) and got a temporary fix. I managed to drive car back to my Garage. It stayed in Garage till 19th as i couldn’t get appointment for Service.
The electrical problem happend again when i tried to drive the car on 19th to take it to workshop. The problem happened while driving and it took lot of effort to control the dead vehicle . This time the helpline ppl came as the car was not too far from dealers service station, and changed the blown out fuse(it was different from one which failed first time on 8th May). I took the vehicle to workshop on 23rd May after another appointment. (I couldn’t do it on 19th as the helpline ppl arrived late evening, the vehicle breakdown happened in the morning). The vehicle stayed in Dealers workshop till 28th for repairing the fault. During the time , i didn’t receive any call from the service to convey me the delivery date or the status. When i visited the workshop , i received some vague replies after spending an entire day at the w/s without anyone attending me. All my phone calls were attended only by receptionists who had no idea about my Car. The Management was too arrogant.
The car was returned back to me on 29th WITHOUT any paperwork or details about what measures r taken to rectify the fault. The only document was a zero value invoice for first service done. The car was completely dirty from inside with dust and grease marks everywhere (This is despite the w/s claiming first service work done, which includes cleaning).
My car is in my Garage since then(till today 13/06/2010) awaiting to hear from TTM since i don’t know if the fault has been repaired.
I get calls from TML Customer support asking me if i have taken a test drive but they refuse to send me in writing that the fault has been repaired.
I have been trying to followup with both TATA MOTORS as well as the dealership to get me the staus of repairs in writing since i am scared to drive the vehicle without any written commitment as it causes a lot of inconvenience apart from Wasted Time and money due to these frequent breakdowns.
So far i have sent 2 letters and several e-mails but no replies except just one from someone Mr. Vinay Padwalker in customer support which is also not very convincing.
Spacious, Looks tough and stylishpoor int/ext finish, highly unreliable, no aftersales support from dealer & manufacturerExterior/Styles

Exterior Exterior is quite good.
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Interior is also quite good, but we can't ride the car without music otherwise back door, children seats, Deskboard and many more things get noise so much that we eritate & can not drive peacefully.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Safari must stop in every 300 km. for 10 min, because the engine is going to high temprature and Check Engine Light is going ON. So be careful you are not going to buy a new technology. Its a typical Premier Padmini Car.
While long route, you also can see the smoke from air condition duct...I have the video for the same.
Clutch & Gear feels like a truck....so you can experiance both in a single amt payment
Ride Quality & Handling As per above, you plan your trip by good management to stop the car for 10 minutes after riding 300 km.
Final Words Its amazing car.
1) Engine Check Light ON after each 300 km.
2) Experiance of Rain in foot...by dropping the water on clutch paddle
3) Suspention Noise
4) Smoke throw out of A/C duct
5) In built Music of Deskboard, Doors and many other things
Areas of improvement NA.

Exterior No other SUV at this cost can beat SAFARI
Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Excellent space for all passengers, specially who sits on big sofa in middle row with a small split AC unit on the roof.
Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox START it and its ready to go anywhere. 11(city)-13(highway) KMPL.
Ride Quality & Handling Excellent ride quality, no worries for bad roads just move on.
Now in detail
An honest review of my favorite, Made In India SUV "The TATA Safari". My passion to own Safari was in my mind for last more than 7 years but I got too confused after reading few -ve reviews by many users on the net. People were comparing Safari features with PAJERO and FORTUNER but how can one compare a SUV which is almost coming at half of the cost of these SUVs (PAJERO & FORTUNER). In the mean time I went to Mahindra showroom with a friend who was looking tobuy XYLO and I looked at SCORPIO there and I have not got a chance earlier to sit and feel Scorpio and I was shocked when I got inside the car, there was no space inside, the front windshield is too close to the driver seat, it felt like sitting in a small hatchback and on the other hand it has got less power ascompared to the SAFARI. The other option was XUV500 but I found it kids SUV when you see SAFARI. The other CAR which always comes to the mind of a buyer whois looking for big car is INNOVA, a beautiful car with pleasure driving and good quality but it seems that you have called a taxi to go somewhere and after all this confusion I decided to go by my heart as I think issues could bethere with any car maker.
While I was expecting some good exterior changes from TATA but I got disappointed with the Safari Stome design, the existing Safari Dicor 2.2 VTT in looks is much better and the show stopper "its back door spare wheel" is not there, it has been put downside of the body spoiling the entire back design (its mypersonal thinking), the front face of SUV has been given a smiling face OMG are you making car for kids, give it some bullish look (see the front ofPAJERO). Then I decided to go for the existing Safari Dicor 2.2 VTT and I got my Safari EX (Pearl White) on 25 June 12. Till now I have only driven 2500 KMand my overall experience is "Want to feel like a king on the road, drive Tata Safari", its road presence is amazing and you can actually feel the power fromthe moment you start the engine. Take it to city or off road it will not disappoint you. Yes there are small issues with the TATA showrooms/service centersbut those can be ignored and you do your own PDI, after all it’s your car spare few minutes for it and if you got some problem bring the issue to theknowledge of service centre and they will resolve it at no extra cost. One thing TATA must do with the new version, don't know if they have done in Strome, please use good plastic although the are OK as compared to the cost of basic vehicle but need more quality items to makes this more premium SUV. One thingTATA Motors must educate to its service centers that now their new vehicles are being used by customers for personal use not only for taxi, service centremust improve their working environment and become more customer friendly.Few other things which will make Safari more attractive: Onboard GPS device, frontfacing last row sitting like Innova, LED front ligth lining, good quality plastic, company fitted premium quality seat covers starting from EX (leathertouch), cabin temperature and water sensing wipers.
The best and unexpected part is that this Bull is giving a mileage of 13 KMPL, I have SWIFT Vdi as well which is almost half of the weight of this BULL and gives mileage of 20KMPL and I think 13 KMPL is not bad. On the other hand the handling part, I feel more confident in city traffic as I can see ahead and onboth side very clearly but for reverse I have got back sensors installed as due to the height of the SUV, back view has always been an issue and it is samefor all SUVs.
Although I have only done 2500KM with my Safari but I can say driving is always a pleasure, no matters what type of road it is or even road is there actuallythe BULL just glides over any surface which is not possible in any sedan. Being a big and heavy car it is not advisable to drive Safari above 100 KMPH ascontrolling the vehicle above 100 KMPH is very difficult as weight is 2700 KG. Drive it around 90KMPH you will feel comfortable and will have control over itas well.
I am very much satisfied 😊 with my TATA Safari Dicor and want to say to all those who love safari and are confused to buy it, just go for it and I am sure youwon't regret it later.
I will share more about the experience/maintenance cost once I have completed 10-15K

Tata Safari is a home grown SUV,so we have to be accomadative towards the features.
The most important thing which strikes you is the truck genes which makes it very strudy& roomy & carries you in style.
when i drove it frm goa to B'lore it was smooth sailing .In the city the problems surfaced: the power steering good fr h'way was not ok fr city .the surge of power on highways was not visible in low rpms.I was reduced to park the Safari &get round in a rick..The weight proved a big hiderance for the stop & go traffic.the city mileage proved to be just 7/ltr!
the simple solution for this good SUV to be the Best of the lot is very simple: SLIM DOWN BABY!.
If Tatas can bring down the weight by just 20% the power to weight ratio will be very favourable & can be a mean machine. It will also mean a more fuel efficent SUV.
The second most important fuel wastage is the1 min start& stop ritual fr the turbo charger which is a national loss fix this technology & then we do not have to look beyond our home grown SAFARI.
If all that is undertaken then all the foreign SUV will have to say goodbye .
