Fiat’s association with India dates back to 1951 when Premier Automobiles Limited produced Fiat 500 for the Indian market. Later in 1954, the 500 was replaced by the Fiat 1100. In 1973, Premier renamed the 1100 as the Premier Padmini and in 1984 the Indian manufacturer launched the Fiat 124 as the Premier 118NE and 138D. In the 1990s, Premier bought in the Uno and the Siena under the Fiat brand name. Fiat Palio, a popular name in the hatchback segment was a popular selling model when it was first introduced in India in 2001.
Currently, the company sells the Punto Evo, Avventura, Abarth Punto, Urban Cross, along with the Linea Classic and the Linea in the sedan segment. FCA India Automobiles Private Limited (FCAIPL) formerly known as Fiat Group Automobiles India Private Limited was formed in the year 2012 as a fully owned direct subsidiary of FCA Italy. The company produces cars and engines under brands like Fiat, Abarth and Jeep.
Fiat brand in India was earlier represented through a joint venture company called Fiat India Automobiles Pvt Ltd., FIAPL (which was later changed to Fiat India Automobiles Ltd., FIAL) founded in the year 1997 with Fiat S.p.A and Tata Motors as the two partners coming together to produce cars for both brands in a plant set up through joint investments at Ranjangaon, in Pune district of Maharashtra.
