Renault, a recognized name in cars across the globe, launches a new vehicle “KWID” in an attempt to capture the hatchback low cost vehicle market. Well I have to say, it is a horrible attempt. The reason for me calling it a lying machine will be evidently clear in the passage below.

I have quiet a few cars, some hatch backs some sedans some SUV’s. I have driven it all and this article is because you can do so much more with just the same amount you pay for KWID. The KWID AMT is the top model in the series.

To begin with, I purchased the vehicle from gen next Renault showroom in vashi . The ordeal begins from here. I was not interested in the look and feel of the car, I just wanted an automatic car, with great fuel efficiency, so I just called them to my office and asked them about the car. I finalized the deal, without taking a test drive based on only Two thing : The sales man said the car will be delivered in two days, and the average is 24 kmpl. I asked the sales man a hundered times and he said “Yes sir, in our AMT model the average is 24kmpl”. I believed the company and not the sales man, I agreed to pay 50 thousand as booking amount.

On the date of delivery I am told that it is not possible, the sales man and his manager come to my office and the sales man tries to put false claims on me. Rather than fighting back, I withdrew my booking and told them I will be happy to cancel my booking. That charged them up and they delivered it the next day.

Later they wanted to charge me 1.5 % extra. Why?Because I paid with my credit card. Local electronic vendors and people who started using the swipe machine after the note ban do this. I did not expect a company like Renault to do this. I told them this is unethical, and I again wanted to withdraw my booking and that is when they cancelled the extra 1.5 % charge.

I took a drive when my car was delivered. The interiors are wore than a S.T bus , the system was making some noise. It has only a single wiper, just like an auto rickshaw. But I had no problems with it because the car had an average of 24kmpl.

So that weekend I took the car and to test its mileage I took a local drive with a full tank. 28 liters of fuel would last at least for 672 kms as per the company claims. Even if I consider an average of 18 kmpl it should last 504 kms. Well to my dismay the fuel tank dropped to almost the end, only 250 kms from Mumbai.

If you want to waste your money, KWID is the answer. If you want to annoy your enemies with a costly gift, KWID is the answer. I have just driven it for 300kms and I willingly want to sell it off for 4.8 lacs, a lac for just using it for 300 kms.
For me KWID is a QUIT.

I own a DUSTER since 2013, been a loyal customer, I won't even get a simple wheel rotation done outside.

Always gave excellent feedback.  I liked Renault that much. I wish to still do. Be it a simple consultation or a regular service, have always liked the guys at Service (Bangalore & Coimbatore).

But recently, I went to buy a KWID (Coimbatore), the sales guys didn't help in any way, I waited eagerly for the launch of KWID AMT, I asked for a call when the bookings open, but got no info/calls, I specifically wanted to use any early bird offers.

Ultimately, I went back and test drove it. I asked for Loyalty benefits & discounts, they gave me nothing, no proper answer and none of the sales guys really stick to their promise of calling and talking.

No Link or Data between After sales, Service and Sales.

I am happy to go to a competitor now.

Reviewers please quote the actual price of the car, stop misleading others that this is a 4 Lakh Car, it's not, it is a 5 Lakh+ Car.

Sales guys themselves say lower variants of 1 Litre Manual and 800 CC KWIDs are not good :). This should sum it up.

I am an Engineer working in Automotive Industry,So here we go:

KWID is AMT, Automated Manual Transmission, not Automatic Transmission. But it's not a killer difference but a need to know.

The lower Models/Variants do have a stiffer steering, the AMT was quite fluid.

It has interior space and is slightly bigger than it's equivalent.

The Accelerator/Acceleration will take some getting used to, when you are at 0 speed(stopped at a signal), you need to gradually press the Accelerator, otherwise there is a fair shiver.

Suspension is not best in class, ride one wheel up a elevated man hole, the other wheel will tilt.

One key point Sales guys don’t mention, the Under-chassis is un-covered or completely open. Just because the car has high ground clearance, if you plan to drive through ankle to knee high water to prove it’s a KWID, you’ll gush in water in to all the Electrical and electronic sub-systems.

For a Indian brand you’ll get a rubberized or plastic under-chassis cover, not fr the KWID.

KWID is a Small Frame Big "Fancy clothed fat Kid", how will it's safety be? Only time will tell.

KWID is not made of gold, it's a bold new venture, car purchase has aftermath, hopefully Renault can live up to it.

Renault is making it in IndiaEverything else, begining with India Sales

Exterior The exterior of the car is really nice.  It looks good and certainly feels like it is costs a lot more than it's price.  The only remotely negative thing that can be said about exterior looks is that the tyres could have had a thicker profile and look a little skinny.

However quality of parts is suspect.  An auto driver hit the front of the car and the entire bumper broke.  It is quite brittle.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) This is a disappointment on several counts.  Firstly, the passenger seat is cramped.  This is because of a combination of the seat design and glove box design, so the knee hits if you are tall.

They have stuck a large looking touch screen.  It is cheap and tacky to say the least.  For example, there is no way to turn off the radio.  How do you do it?  You reduce volume to zero if you want to use any other feature.  Yes really.  The system has navigation but no information to explain how the maps can be updated. Overally really tacky.

There is no internal side mirror adjust.  Not even a manual plasticky stick that exists in cars from 15 years ago.  I did not even think if asking whether this feature existed and so when I found out it didn't, it was a big surprise.  Now the side mirror is also very flimsy.  So within a month it broke while trying to adjust it physically.  This is a major pain if the car is going to be driven by more than one person.  I offered to pay whatever money it takes if they could fit an aftermarket adjustable mirror.. but no luck and no options.

The seats hoowever are pretty good and comfortable.  They also offer adequate thigh support.

The boot space is a nice surrpise and actually quite massive considering the dimensions of the car.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox One major thing that isn't advertised is that the fuel tank is less than 20 liters capacity. In fact till date the service center / sales team have not confirmed to me the exact stated capacity. So the range in city conditions is less than 300 kms.  I got good mielage initially on the highway ~ 20 km/liter. Than Renault did a 'runing' of the AMT without asking me when I sent for routine service. I find this attitude amazing. The net result is that my mielage dropped tremendously. After pitching a fit, it was tuned back and is now hovering at around 16 kmpl in city conditions.

The car isn't peppy, so don't expect quick overtaking etc.  However, the automatic is really convenient to drive.  The car doesn't have a crawl function.  So especially in cities where the roads aren't flat, you need to keep your leg on the brake at traffic lights.

Ride Quality & Handling The handling is quite good and the high chassis ensures that you don't feel too much of bumps etc.  For a car in this segment, the NVH levels are also quite acceptable.

However, again quite a few tacky parts come to the fore.  For example, the accelerator lever keeps squeaking and this has not been fixed even after service.

Final Words If you are in the market for a low cost, convenient car that is going to mainly be driven by one person, then the AMT is a good choice.  Be prepared to spend about 10 K and slap on a parking sensor / camera.  It is well worth it.

Areas of improvement Internally adjustable side mirrors.  Better quality touch console. Atleast parts that have more wear and tear or could be damaged, should be of better quality.

Looks, Ground Clearance, Easy to manoeuvreNo internal OVRM adjust, cheap parts that break easily

      Exterior Good.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Good.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Bad.

Ride Quality & Handling Ride quality physically is ok, but the AMT version is really bad as i own it, sudenly the operating system fails and you get a pulse like indicator and the vechile stops in the middle of the road, such an embarasment you have to push the vechile to the road side, wait for the chance in case it gets started again pray and then again try to put in the driving mode, very low milleage.

So sorry Renault, you dream of playing big in india is going to get shattered very soon, when we early adopters are facing so much issue, how will you put an end to this bad word of mouth, just selling few cars in comaparision to your competitor is not going to place any where. please address this issue fast, even for the exsiting customers.

only style is good and the boot spacefalse operating alarms, suddenly stops the CAR in the middle of the haevy traffic pathetic

      Exterior Ok.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Lacking seat back pouches and other convenient stowage options. Infotainment screen has limited options. Reverse camera integration, outside temperature etc mentioned in manual but not provided. Menu does not contain ECO option for driving economics reports though manual mentions it.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Very poor pick up. Makes overtaking dangerous. Jerky gear shift by AMT, poor fuel efficiency.

Ride Quality & Handling Poor airconditioner unit, failed within 1 month of purchase in hot summer.

Final Words Poor design and manufacturing quality. Can look at Maruti ALTO K10 AMT if you are not too particular about Infotainment  panel.

Areas of improvement Dirt and leaves collect between windscreen and hood. The gap should have been sealed. Windscreen should have been provided with all around rubber seal. Wiper-arm rubs against hood when lifted for cleaning.

The air conditioning does not seem to be designed for Indian conditions. The roof panel has a depression on the rear area where rain water collects and will eventually spoil the metal work.

Optional manual shift (as provided in other makes will improve overtaking performance.

Infotainment panel may provide integration with an optional rear camera/side cameras while reversing, turning. ECo mode may be enabled.

Good looksInfotainment system features.Poor pick up. Poor AC (cooling), poor mileage.

From the day i bought the car probably a week after i felt car had issues. Gear box had major problem after six month . Car suddenly stopped on a slope and refuse to move. Service centre issued a fake certificate to us saying it was a minor problem. i fail to understand how can new car have such problem unless there is a manufacturing defects. On service centre promise we took the car back. Two months later another problem. car just stopped again in the middle of the road. Service centre saying its a software problem. Experience with the car has been only painful. i expected them to take the car back . Dealer as as well company are not ready to listen. i strongly recommend to stay away from any version of Kwid car. There are much better cars out there in the market.

      Exterior Stylish and Sporty

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Spacious enough for a small family of 4-5 members.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox I brought my kwid around 1 year back and driven more than 8500 kms.

Fuel economy is good for amt variant. I got around 28.5kmpl without ac in 250km long drive ( minimum traffic condition ) and got around 23.5kmpl with ac under same condition and distance.

In city drive got around 14/15 kmpl with ac.

In mixed condition got around 18/19 kmpl with ac.

The negative i found is, there is a problem with automatic gear box, sometimes i feel a lag while shifting to reverse gear. It beeps 3-4 times before shifting to reverse gear, even though the brake pedal is fully pressed. I went to service center to resolve that issue, but they said it is common for amt variant. I felt it a bit annoying.

Ride Quality & Handling Ride quality is great, handling is ok. The negative i found is, sometimes we find lack of power while we try to overtake large container vehicles etc.. with fully loaded car and ac on. I think it might be because mine is automatic version.

Final Words Go for it,  i can assure that you wont regret your purchase.

Areas of improvement No rear power windows in full option model.

Mileage, Driving ComfortReverse Gear lag issue

      Exterior Looks very nice.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Spacious in this segment - very nice AC.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Fuel Economy is a HUGE HUGE disappointment. In the last forty five days - the average mileage in the city was 7 km/L. The car weighs a huge 400 kgs less than other cars in this segment. Despite such huge weight reduction - this kind of mileage is pathetic. The technician at the service center says "In the city you can expect 11 to 13 kmpl only - you cannot expect more. On the highways - you can get 18kmpl" When I countered about company's claim of 24 kmpl - he said - you can get 24 kmpl - if you drive at 50 kmph without AC" I was rooting for KWID - but looking at the mileage - i think I have made a HUGE mistake.

      Ride Quality & Handling GOOD.

Final Words Please do not buy - as the mileage figures are pathetic.

      Areas of improvement NA.

      Good looks, CHEAPvery bad mileage

Exterior Looks good and good colors of choice.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Best infotainment panel, difficult in accesing automatic switches for only front windows, Suffiecint boot space and luggage room.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Poor Enginer, always trouble with Immobiliser . Fuel efficiency is not as expected.

Ride Quality & Handling Decent and ease in driving for city

Final Words Better to think alternate. My Kwid RXT breakdown 2 times after second serivice. Service centre at Vellore unable to find the problem. the way they attend customers shows the future of this company. Its annoying to hear the beep sounds and Immobiliser light frequently . The service centre fellows fetl theat water washing the car is the major thing to do for free service. My car is towed to nearest service centre now and even after 4 days they are unable to find what is wrong . Simply lot of calls from service centres but one thing they are omitting that a car owner thinks " there should be no break down in road" ...

Areas of improvement Enginer and its performance. there shoudl be better qualified professinals at service centres to attend customers.

Ease of Driving, Inforainment panelPoor Performance , Poor service centres, Immobiliser switch , Poor economy fuel consumption
