The steering wheel of a Formula 1 car is one of the most important components. It controls and displays tonnes of information that a Formula 1 driver would like to use during his race. His main target is to win the race. In order to achieve that, the driver could adjust each and every parameter of his car using the steering wheel, because you really can’t take your hands off the wheel while doing 270kmph in a straight line.
The driver is the only person who can change various settings like the differential settings, air-fuel mix and the torque curve. All of these settings can change several times during a race, or even a lap using the various knobs on the steering wheel. This information is displayed in a small LCD screen that is fitted on the center of the wheel, which has a resolution of 480x272 pixels. All these attributes make the Formula 1 steering wheel one of the most complex technoloies ever developed. But the wheels differ from driver to driver. Each and every Formula 1 driver has the option to customise the overall settings. James Allen and Dominic Harlow - two former chief operations engineer at Force India F1 made a video that shows the differences between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's F1 2014 steering wheels.
