Christmas is over but the spirit still lives. While most of our decorations are resting safely in packed boxes in the storage, ready to be used next year, the NASCAR racing track is making sure that the season of joy lasts a little longer. How?
Oh! This practically awe-inducing display of Christmas lights ought to answer that. Three million lights and 800 displays is a hard to beat feat or a hard to miss in the dark feature as well. The sight could put even the best decorated houses in the vicinity to shame. First, there is the vision of thousands of lights flickering along to "All I Want for Christmas is You." And while that's happening, you're driving around the track of a hallowed NASCAR superspeedway. Doesn’t get better than this, does it?
And if it is of any interest to you, work behind this spectacle began back in October, with crews stringing the lights and testing them. The total course runs 3.1 miles and it required 2,700 man-hours of stringing and testing.
Speedway communications manager Jonathan Coleman says it takes 30 to 45 minutes to make sure the lights in the track are on. And for those worried about the electricity bill they might be racking up, it seems it is not as bad as you might think. "Per night, the bill amounts to what an average house in the area uses in a month—$75 to $100," Coleman says.
Speedway Christmas started in 2010 using just 500 displays. The display, however, has been getting bigger every year and in this case brighter as well.
