We knew this was coming the day Porsche started delivering the 918 Spyder to the customers. We knew there would be a time when the 918, inevitably, will be pitted against its ancestor – the Carrera GT. Although to be brutally honest, it wasn’t too difficult to foresee the 10-year-old Carrera GT being left in a cloud of dust formed by the 918.
As much of a technical marvel it was back in its day, the Carrera GT is now a 10-year-old design and is outclassed by several supercars from today’s era; a point proven by Porsche’s own 918 Spyder. In a simple drag race against the latter, the Carrera GT is seen struggling to put its power down while its opponent shoots off the line like a cannonball.
To be fair to the older car, the Carrera GT is more of an old-school supercar, with its glorious sounding V10 engine, a manual gearbox and very little interference from the electronic nannies under the hood. On the other hand, the 918 Spyder is a nerd’s wet dream with its advanced hybrid drivetrain, all-wheel-drive and sophisticated electronics.
Ideally, then, Porsche’s next supercar should sound like a Carrera GT while accelerating like a 918 Spyder. Though all things considered among both these cars, is it just me who would still pick the Carrera GT over the 918?
