This is the Renault Espace F1? Never heard of it? That’s because it’s the only one of its kind, and what a kind it is. In 1995, Renault turned the humble Espace MPV into a mental looking V10 engined beast of a creation to celebrate its involvement in Formula 1.
The Espace F1 was conceived to celebrate 10 years of partnership between Renault and Matra Formula 1 firm. As it turned out, Renault revelled in the feat with 10 cylinders for birthday candles. The Espace F1 used an 800 horsepower 3.5-litre V10 engine formerly seen in the in the 1993 Williams-Renault Formula race car.
Surprisingly, the Espace F1 had more in common with a Formula One car as the former used a lightweight carbon fibre F1-style chassis married to a carbon fibre-reinforced body shell resembling a regular Espace although Renault never really fooled anyone with that outrageously brilliant piece of design. Oh, and it sounds… well, have a look at the video yourself and appreciate the magnificence that is now resting in a Museum in France.
