Video: First i8 customer in the world is a genuine BMW fan

What you’re about to see is the story of Dirk Schulz, the first BMW i8 customer in the world. Mr Schulz here, in fact, is a rather special customer for the German automaker as he was also one of the first to get hold of the Z1 roadster when the latter was introduced back in 1989. 

He optioned the i8 when he saw The Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics – a concept that previewed the i8, in 2010. At that time, neither the price nor any technical data of the car was known but Mr Schulz persuaded himself to buy the production version of the concept anyway. 

Gradually, rumours about a production version started swirling and he hoped a 10-cylinder engine would make it in to the car. What the i8, however, eventually received was a turbocharged 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Nonetheless, Mr Schulz considers the i8 to be very special indeed and keeps it in his driveway with utmost pride.
