Getting a ticket for driving is bad, but if the fine for the ticket runs into millions, then that is certainly the worst. Setting the world record for this quite expensive feat is a Swedish motorist, who was slapped a fine of a whopping $1 million after he was caught speeding on the roads of Switzerland.
The driver was ‘cruising’ in his black Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at close to 186mph (300kmph), about two and half times the permissible speed on the Swiss Motorway. The man escaped the older photo-radars that were incapable of tracking cars with a speed of over 200kmph. He was finally caught on one of the new generation photo-radars, after which a patrol car was sent to pull up the speeding car.
According to reports, the driver of the SLS required over half a kilometre of the road to come to a halt. While the man did not face prison time back in 2010, the fine levied on him was massive because of the Swiss rules that require the fines to be proportional to the individual’s income and the severity of the offence.
The speed-hungry millionaire, made it to the Swiss record books as well, as a police spokesman had said that they did not have a record of anyone travelling faster than him in the country. In his defence, all the driver had to say was, “I think the speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty.” Now, don’t we all know how that works?
