Ever heard of a car cemetery? Well, there is no such term, but we motorheads love our cars and a few like me even believe cars are as alive as humans. Well, in that case there should be burial ground right? That’s what those who abandoned these vehicles, alleged to be there since WWII at the Chatillon Car Graveyard, may have thought of.
According to rumours, when the World War II was over, the US troops while returning home were unable to ship their cars back home. Instead they decided to hide these vehicles in the woods with a hope to come back someday and collect it. But, they didn’t and these vehicles rotted to death and in consequence this became the world’s largest carcemetery. This also resulted in more vehicles being dumped there, while most of the cars are still lying some were even stolen.
However, Chatillion natives have a different tale to tell, they have said that none of this is true and the place is nothing more than a scrapyard. They also claim these cars were found after the evacuation of the US soldiers. In which case, it does signify that it was found post WW II, but the locals could be right as well. In 2010, this place was cleaned and all cars were reportedly removed citing environmental concerns.
Such a mass dumping of cars is demeaning for car lovers and never should cars be abandoned. In which case we might want to buy the story that the US soldiers left these cars with no option in hand and they did it with an intention to take them back.
