It was a very glamourous event when Polaris launched the Slingshot for the global market last year. However, the three-wheeled performance vehicle has hit a major roadblock due to a recall.
The American manufacturer has sent a notice to those who have bought the vehicle advising them of a potential defect with the ball bearings in the steering rack. The company said that vehicles with this defect could possibly lose steering, which would be exceptionally dangerous when zipping around on the open road. The issue doesn't end here. There is a second issue with the Slingshot that involves the roll hoops over the driver and passenger seats - a parts supplier has advised Polaris that some of the hoops are not up to the performance specs provided by Polaris and therefore may not protect the driver and passenger adequately in case of a crash. The company has said that the spares will be made available from January 22 to dealers, and it will replace the parts free of cost.
The Polaris Slingshot competes with the KTM X-Bow, but was never successful as the latter. Soon after it was launched, the Slingshot hit some legal hurdles as some states in the US didn’t recognise it as a motorcycle, due to the seating configuration.
