They drive the world’s most powerful race cars and go wheel-to-wheel at 328kmph but outside of the racing track F1 drivers are sane, normal people who do things like eat Chinese food, go to the super market or grow potted plants in their backyard. Photos in tabloids suggest this is true to a certain extent or is it?
We like to believe that even off the track, they need a dose of adrenaline from time to time and so accordingly participate in the off the grid challenges. One such is this video that Lotus has released of its drivers Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean doing a mall chase in a pair of Renault Twizys in the Mall of Dubai, which by the way is the world’s largest mall.
The video in an obvious sense is a promotion for the quirky- looking Twizy EV and the Mall of Dubai. It chronicles their adventure through various parts of the mall including a section where Romain Grosjean goes sliding around on an ice skating rink demonstrating the Twizy’s ability to go tail-happy with just 17bhp on the tap.
Unlike the rather crazy attempt by Top Gear TV show where they raced a Ford Fiesta against a Chevrolet Corvette in a shopping mall which ended with most of the mall being trashed, this one is a lot slower and demonstrates that theTwizy is an ideal machine for moving around in tight urban spaces.
Just to recap, the Twizy is a small EV developed as an urban mobility solution. It is powered by a 17bhp electric motor which sends power to the rear wheels. Renault have tweaked the suspension to make it agile and in turn quite tail happy.
The Formula 1 season has closed after a spectacular finish under the floodlights at the Yas Marina Circuit at Abu Dhabi but it appears that the UAE or the F1 teams are not done with their share of racing for 2014.
