The last time we saw someone piloting a car whilst not being in the driver’s seat, it was Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, sitting in the back of a BMW 7 Series and making an escape from a bunch of baddies. And if you fancy pulling off something similar, you might want to look at Land Rover’s latest development in autonomous driving.
Using a Range Rover Sport prototype, Land Rover has demonstrated how a driver could drive the vehicle from outside the car using nothing but their smartphone.
The smartphone app controls the way the 2.2-tonne mammoth steers, accelerates and brakes as well as changing from high and low range of the gearbox. But as much of a revelation this new technology is, it is still not as impressive as Mr. Bond’s 7 Series. Unlike the BMW that managed to evade the baddies at ludicrous speeds, this prototype Range Rover can be driven using the smartphone at a maximum speed of just 6kmph!
