You might have heard of stories where everyday objects signed by celebrities and famous persons being auctioned off for ridiculous prices. Now, a new addition to this list is a motorcycle helmet signed by 12 GP legends, which set the auction record for the most expensive lid, ever sold.
The pink AGV helmet helped a Spanish university student and a LCR Honda Team member raise a staggering EUR 2,55,000 (Rs 1.97 crore) for a cancer charity. The helmet was signed by signed by Giacomo Agostini, Angel Nieto, Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez, Dani Pedrosa, Wayne Rainey, Loris Capirossi, Alex Criville, Wayne Gardner, Scott Russell and Randy Mamola, who cumulatively have won 58 world titles in the premiere class MotoGP championship.
The money raised will go to AECC, the Spanish charity which fights cancer and Riders For Health, the official charity of MotoGP. The helmet broke the auction record for a helmet previously held by Formula One ace Ayrton Senna’s helmet, which had raised EUR 94,200 in 2012, for a different charity. Anthony Constantinou, who incidentally is also the 2015 title sponsor for LCR Honda, made the winning bid for the ‘Stop Cancer’ helmet.
Constantinou, who was in the Valencia for the last MotoGP race, took part in the auction online. “With so many families affected by cancer, it's important that we all join together to support the charities which provide vital services for patients and their loved ones.” He said. “I'm pleased I could play a part in this deserving cause and I hope it inspires others to get involved in the fight against cancer.”
