Lets face it, we've all seceretly dreamt of a job in civil services, every time we saw cops riding some big burly machines in Hollywood features. Back home in India, we haven't been as gifted with motorcycles. Police motorcycles for us were either the Royal Enfields, or if you really look back, the Yezdis and the Jawa's. Believe it or not, Gujarat Police is is likely to get an Harley-Davidson motorcycle fleet for their vigilant duties.
This would be the first time that Indian police would be using motorcycles larger than the 500cc capacity, and this would mean India becomes the 46th country in the world to be having Harley Davidson's in its fleet!
And not just Harley-Davidson, the agency has approached various other premium motorcycle manufacturers like the Triumph, Hyosung and BMW. The reason Harley-Davidson was zeroed down initially because the American manufacturer was ready to fix the special accessories along with Gujarat Police logo and deliver it before January. For now, seven Street 750 and Super Low motorcycles will be handed over to Gujarat Police before the Vibrant Gujarat Summit that will be held next month.
The selections of these bikes were done by the technical committee but will review other manufacturers as well. It is very unlikely for the BMW motorcycles to make is way to the Police garage as they are very expensive as compared to the Triumph and Hyosung, which will be considered in next few weeks.
But if you are thinking that these motorcycles will be used for getting hold of thieves, then you are wrong. These premium motorcycles will be used majorly for escorting VIPs, which we think isn’t the right thing to do. The tax payers money is being used to add glittery to VIPs motorcade, when a regular motorcycle would do the job of keep the motorcade route safe. In 2013, the same security force bought over 100 Pulsar 220F motorcycles, however, some of the police personnels were unable to handle the bikes at high speed. Trainings will be provided by the respective motorcycle manufacturers, but just like other police vehicles, maintaining these bikes will prove to be a major problem.
