The Range Rover Sport has been called by some as the Rolls-Royce of the SUV world. It boasts the highest level of performance ever offered on a Range Rover and is luxury personified. However, while the car as a whole would be a potential target for thieves, there is something else which has caught their fancy.
A spate of thefts around Bradford in Northern England has seen numerous 4x4s attacked - with expensive LED lights being the main target and it is thought to be used for drug production. Police received nine reports of thefts from Range Rovers in the area between April 22 and May 9.
It is common knowledge that cultivating drugs on a large scale is deemed illegal in certain countries or require a licence to do so, but the people here take the cake. Not only are they trying to cheat the law but have even devised a really queer method of doing it. According to the authorities, the LED headlights (both daytime running lights and aftermarket LED lamps) are being stolen and sold to drug dealers.
These LED lamps are an efficient replacement for sunlight and therefore growing drugs indoors seems to be working out fine for the thieves.
Apparently, the job of taking out the headlamps does not need much time. In less than a minute the LED lights can swiped off the vehicle and some victims have even asked Land Rover, which manufactures Range Rovers, to take action. A mechanic in the area has been quoted as saying, Peter Earwaker, of Bingley Car Bodyshop, has dealt with around 10 similar cases. He says, “It can take 30 to 60 seconds to steal a full set of headlights and grille from a Range Rover.”
While, only the case of the missing headlights seem to be intriguing the police, other expensive and high-end cars are also being targeted, if not for this purpose, for sale as spare parts. So take care of your car’s lights as well.
