Sachin Tendulkar, the prolific Indian cricketer and an avid automobile enthusiast inaugurated the go-karting arena ‘Sky Karting’ – a facility of Smaaash Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. The motorsports enthusiasts from the island city of Mumbai and around will be elated to finally have a world class go-karting track in the middle of the city where they can let loose on a track designed specially by the former Italian and European go-karting champion, Paulo Gagliardini.
The 300m long track spread across 30000sqft is located at Kamala Mills, Lower Parel, on the roof-top – where you can race under the skies fighting the heat or rain while honing your skills. The track is fairly easy to manoeuvre for beginners and at the same time quite technical for those who would want to go flat out. As Paulo said, ‘If you can hold on to the kart, there are only two corners where you need to brake’. The track surface is laid with a special resin patented by the Milano based PGK Design with a team of specialists flown in from Italy. The surface offers excellent grip to the tyres which will help you stay on course even if you try to push it beyond your limits, but, bearing in mind the roof-top circuit, it is better to stay in control all the time.
Sachin Tendulkar, the brand ambassador and stake holder at Smaaash, said, “With motorsports gaining popularity in the country, there is a lot of talent waiting to be unleashed and Sky Karting will provide the right inspiration to such talent. Sky Karting, with its unique proposition, will be the ideal destination for sports lovers looking for a dose of adrenaline pumping action’.
After the closure of the last good karting track – Hakone – a couple of years ago, racing enthusiasts in and around Mumbai had no place where they could pursue the sport or at least have a good time. Now, with the Sky Karting arena, we can expect future Kartikeyans to develop and fine tune their skills on the 6.5hp karts available here. We would also be interested if these circuits can handle the powerful Rolon karts. Currently the fees are Rs 250 for three minutes for weekdays and Rs 300 for weekends, but the administration is open to changing it to lap basis depending upon the way things work out for them.
We at CarWale, give three cheers to Sachin Tendulkar and Smaaash for providing a much needed infrastructure to the racing enthusiasts, where the young blood can sweat it out safely and drive calmly on public roads!
