The men in my team often discuss what it would mean to have a crore to spare to their respective bank accounts. Motoring junkies as they are, their desires are purely automotive – a couple of new sweet rides, remodeled cars, a luxury car fleet, a sportsbike collection and the list goes on. I wonder on whose wish list would a historic racing track feature ?
In case your list matches this requirement then you might want to check Craigslist. The things you find on Craigslist is certainly questionable but then who would want pass up this chance? Marlboro Motor Raceway in Maryland is currently up for sale on Craigslist for a cool $9,985,000 (Rs 63.63 crore). Once known as "The Grand Lady of the East," this track hosted everything from NASCAR to the Corvette's racing debut.
For that many crore, a racing track could be all yours but, be warned there are more prices to be paid. The condition of the track is not what you would expect. The facilities are crumbling, flooding from a branch of the Patuxent River has buried and washed out portions of the track, and nearby residents will certainly be a bit miffed that the track is being opened again. But we are sure, for the love racing, these are small prices to pay, right?
Marlboro Motor Raceway existed in three notable forms - a dirt oval, a paved oval ("The Bowl"), and various paved road courses, including a karting track in the infield. MMR's fate was sealed primarily by the construction of Summit Point Motorsports Park (then Summit Point Raceway) in Summit Point, West Virginia. Still in operation today, Summit Point boasted greater safety and a much more accommodating landscape. One major safety concern at Marlboro was its two opposing straights on the south and east sides of the circuit. Oncoming traffic was generally separated by nothing more than a grass median and contemporary wood and tyre barriers. Due to the track's location and orientation, addressing the facility's safety flaws would have been costly and tedious.
Enthusiasts and developers alike have demonstrated interest in the MMR property, but nothing has been pursued with any degree of urgency. But that does not stop a true motoring fan does it? And once you have this in your possession, you can always say we helped you to your dream.
If you were in possession of such a property what would you do with it? Share your ideas with us.
