We usually see hear a Japanese or a European automotive giant developing a vehicle that is highly fuel efficient but uses up millions of dollars in development. The perception is that you need to spend lots of money to develop something revolutionary or maybe, not.
Four final year mechanical students from Mangalore have developed a bike-engineered car that can deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 32kmpl and it costs just Rs 1 lakh. Safwan, Samnan, Mohammed Suhail and Mohammed Adil from Bearys Institute of Technology have developed a two-seater prototype car using the engine of the Bajaj Pulsar 150. While it looks more like a college project, this innovation is quite unique and cost effective. It took them six days to prepare a design and around 25 days to complete the project. These students used autorickshaw tyres for this vehicle which weighs just 280kgs.
The main purpose behind this project is to make a utility vehicle for a common man. While this is a very good project by the students, it is too early to say if this vehicle is commercially viable. We appreciate their effort in creating something like this and we will be glad if more college students make an effort to innovate for the Indian automotive industry.
