- Maruti currently has 14 CNG-enabled models
- Dzire will debut CNG for the new Z-Series engine
The Maruti Wagon R is the Japanese automaker’s leading CNG vehicle in terms of private market buyers. It has a 46 per cent share of Maruti’s total CNG sales followed by the Brezza SUV in second place with 26 per cent share. This means the rest of the 28 per cent share has been divided between the other 12 CNG-enabled models ranging from the Alto to the Grand Vitara.
What makes this interesting is the fact that the Ertiga Tour contributes a higher number, 56 per cent to be exact, to the overall CNG volumes but is considered as separate as this is a fleet market-only vehicle. Maruti recently expanded its production capacity in Manesar just to accommodate the added demand for the Ertiga. The new production line can produce over one lakh units per annum.
In the overall scheme of things, Maruti aims to sell six lakh CNG-powered cars as compared to the 4.8 lakh units that it sold in the previous financial year. This move has undoubtedly come on the back of the Brezza, and the Grand Vitara getting CNG power. In other news, the new Z-Series engine will get CNG power with the upcoming Dzire by the end of this quarter.
