VW India might showcase the Tiguan SUV in India at the Indian Auto Expo 2014 claims a report on Motoroids.
The Tiguan is based on the Mk6 Golf platform codenamed PQ35 and this has been shared by several VAG group cars which also includes the Skodas. The Tiguan began life in Auto 5000 a subsidiary of VW, which started in 2007, the production however happened inside VW’s complex in Wolfsburg, Germany. The subsidiary was named Auto 5000 as the initial monthly rate of pay was 5000 Deutsche Marks and the number of employees was 5000 (3500 in Wolfsburg and 1500 additional jobs at Hanover) hence the company name Auto 5000. In 2008, VW took over the manufacturing and since then the compact crossover has sold close to a million units globally. The Tiguan’s main markets are Australia, Brazil, China, Europe, Russia and the United States of America.
In India, the Tiguan might be brought through the CBU route. It might share the powertrains with the smaller Jetta. The Jetta’s 1.4-litre TSI-powered petrol engine and the 2.0-litre TDI oil burner mated to a six-speed manual and six-speed DSG gearbox might be the engine options offered. The Tiguan is priced on par with the Passat in the US and UK markets which means it will cost around Rs 20 – 22 lakh in India. This ensures VW India cannot play the pricing game to its advantage and if launched it might cross the Rs 20 lakh figure.
In India, the Tiguan will be battling it out with established SUVs such as Honda CR-V and Renault Koleos. This is just a speculation so it is wise that we wait for confirmation from VW India on the Tiguan launch.
