Volkswagen India might showcase the Taigun crossover in India at the Indian Auto Expo 2014 along with the Tiguan SUV.The Taigun is the German car maker’s offering for the crossover segment in India.
The Taigun is an all-new crossover based on VW’s New Small Family platform, used by the Up! hatchback which might also be shown at the expo. The great news for us is the vehicle will be assembled in two parts of the world; in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Pune, India for left-hand-drive markets and right-hand-drive markets respectively.
In India, the Taigun will be locally made and maybe competitively priced at around Rs 9 – Rs 14 lakh. The crossover is a sub-four metre in length and gets an all-new 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI petrol engine producing 108bhp. The company is also working on an all-new 1.4-litre three-cylinder diesel engine which could be plonked into the Indian Taigun. All these developments help in qualifying it for the excise concessions.
In India, the Taigun will be battling it out with crossovers like the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano. Unlike its competitors the Taigun features clean lines and is designed to appeal to a wide audience. It has the right mix of modern design, which is not over the top or radical and is not too understated either.
Even though the Taigun will be showcased at the Auto Expo its launch might not happen this year. We can expect more news only after its official unveiling at the biennial Auto Show in New Delhi.
