Sources state that Volvo has set out to trademark the S50 nameplate. Although, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the car maker will be rolling out a car immediately, we’ve seen a number of companiesacquire names to prevent them from being used by competitors.
Let’s get back to the S50 nameplate. Rumours suggest that the S50 could be a new sports car from their Polestar performance division. There has already been some talk about Polestar working on a few bespoke models, which could begin with a coupe that has about 600bhp on tap.
Then, there’s also the possibility of the S50 being a stylish four-door coupe version of the next generation S40, a car that will borrow design cues from the 40.2 concept and is due late next year. The brand could also tread down the same path as Audi, like its practice with its A5 Sportback which is essentially based on an A4. If that’s the case, we’d expect the S50 to be substantially pricier than the regular S40.
We should know somewhere down the line as to what Volvo is cooking upplanning with the S50. But until then, we will be seeing more of the brand teasing and Volvo preparing its XC40 compact crossover in the immediate future. Stay tuned.
