Volvo to start manufacturing XC60 in China

It seems that Geely, the parent company of the Volvo, has started the local production of the XC60 in China as a new batch of images of the Volvo XC60 reportedly manufactured at the new Geely-funded factory has emerged. Besides the XC60, the facility located in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province also manufactures the China-specific long wheel base Volvo S60L. 

The XC60 will make its debut in the Chinese market at the Chengdu Auto Show and is expected to hit the showrooms by the end of this year. Production of the XC60 will move into full swing by early next year, when the facility will start exporting cars to other markets in Asia as well as Australia and New Zealand. As both Australia and New Zealand are right-hand-drive (RHD) markets, it can be said with certainty that the facility has been equipped to manufacture both LHD and RHD cars.

Volvo cars usually rank high on the practicality scale and the XC60 is no exception. It is a good looking, spacious and well equipped SUV and despite being a completely built unit (CBU), is offered in India with a competitive price tag.

The Volvo XC60 currently sold in India is manufactured at the company’s manufacturing facility in Ghent, Belgium. If Volvo does decide to start importing cars from China instead of Belgium, the Swedish company is sure to save a significant amount in transportation costs, though we will have to wait and watch whether the Indian customer will get a share of the spoils.
