Volvo has set itself on the path of entering the sub Rs 30 lakh range (to gain volumes) with the introduction of a new vehicle as well as a new variant for an existing model. The new vehicle will be the V40 crossover while the other vehicle will be a variant of the V40 Cross Country with a 1.6-litre petrol engine. The V40 will make its debut later this year while the petrol powered Cross Country will arrive a month later.
We got talking to Tomas Ernberg, MD of Volvo Cars India, during the opening of their new dealership at Andheri West in Mumbai and he told us that apart from the smaller vehicles their major launch for the Indian market will be the all-new XC90 SUV whose booking will begin in May and then will be launched in September.
The company expects around 200 pre-orders and eventually hopes to deliver 400 units of the SUV by the end of the financial year. In addition to these models, Volvo, on the basis of customer demand, will also introduce a more powerful variant of the S60 sedan with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 305bhp.
Tomas also hinted that in the future the company could also offer the T8 Twin Hybrid engine for the all-new XC90.
