There is no doubt that the Toyota Fortuner is the king of its segment and has been so consistently over the years. There is competition and a few better than the Fortuner in terms of capability but none are able to beat the Japanese SUV when it comes to numbers.
According to reports VW now wants its share of the action in that segment too and its Fortuner rival is assumed to be under development. Now you might say that they already have one in the form of the Tiguan. However, the Tiguan is a 5-seater and its segment begins where the Fortuner segment finishes. What VW need is a more affordable seven seater that that can undercut the Fortuner’s price and trust us when we say, it is on the way.
So what can we expect? Clearly, the vehicle will be in the range of 5 meters being a seven seater. Expect it to be powered by the same 2-litre engine with an option of a manual and a DSG gearbox. MQB platform means the SUV will be dynamically very potent while a bucket-load of electronics are expected to assist during off-roading.
With the Toyota Fortuner’s number’s holding steady at almost 2000 cars a month, it is an extremely profitable segment this. Considering how competent the Tiguan is, VW has the tools to make a product that can give the Fortuner a run for its money. Keep watching this space for more!
