The latest-generation Volkswagen Passat is offered with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. Sitting on top of this range is a 2-litre, four cylinder diesel engine developing up to 240bhp of power. Now though, the German automaker has revealed the same bi-turbo engine with additional 32bhp of power.
Rated at 272hp, the 2-litre unit features a two-stage electrically operated turbocharger. Although Volkswagen has not yet revealed the torque figures, it will be noticeably higher than the 500Nm currently available in the Passat.
Besides the two stage turbocharger, Volkswagen has also made use of a high pressure common-rail fuel injection system that can be operated at pressures of up to 2,500bar. Additionally, the brand has previewed a newly developed 10-speed DSG automatic gearbox for engines with up to 550Nm of torque.
Expectedly, both the high power engine and gearbox option will be reserved for the high-end versions of the Passat and the Touareg. Expect Volkswagen to roll out this higher spec power-train into production models in the next couple of years.
