Volkswagen has unveiled its seventh generation Golf at the new national gallery in Berlin. Based on VW’s MQB platform the new Golf which has shed around 99kg of weight is touted to have more features and better performance than the current model.
The mark 7 2013 Golf is 57mm longer 13mm wider. Due to being based on the MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten/ Modular Transverse Matrix) the car has become 23 per cent more fuel efficient than the outgoing model.
The car is expected to have a host of driver aids like multi-collision braking system, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and progressive steering. Due to the lengthened body the interiors have now become roomier. The dashboard now gets a touchscreen as standard along with an upgraded navigation system.
The European spec model will have 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol engines coupled with cylinder deactivation technology for better fuel efficiency. For those looking for diesels there will be the option of a 1.6-litre 103bhp and a 2-litre 138bhp engine. Launched in 1974, the Golf has sold over 29 million units and has been one the German auto giant’s top selling models.
