- The penalty was determined on the basis of 3.27 lakh Volkswagen cars sold in India with a deceitful software
A four-member expert panel constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has recommended that the German car manufacturer Volkswagen pay at least Rs 171.34 crore as a “conservative” fine for damage to health caused in India. A media report reveals that Volkswagen cars released approximately 48.678 tonnes of NOx in 2016. The estimated health damage is calculated considering Delhi as the base city.
The penalty was determined on the basis of 3.27 lakh Volkswagen cars sold in India with a deceitful software. The report was filed on orders passed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel on November 16, 2018, when Volkswagen was directed to deposit Rs 100 crores within one month in the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The findings state that longer exposure to elevated concentrations of NO2 may contribute to the development of asthma and potentially increase susceptibility to respiratory infections.
