Volkswagen will localise its new-generation 2.0-litre diesel engine. Codenamed EA288, it follows in the footsteps of the 1.5-litre diesel engine which was localised last year. It will be the second major localised product after the Ameo sedan to enter the Indian market from VW.
The engine powers a variety of vehicles across VW’s many manufacturers. From VW it powers the Jetta and soon-to-be-launched Passat while under the Skoda brand name it powers the Superb, Octavia as well as the Yeti crossover. Moving ahead it also powers the Audi A3, A4, A6, Q3 and Q5 making this an important mill for the automaker.
The engine is also BS6 compliant and will give VW a head start in making its vehicles compliant with the emission norms which will come into place in 2016.
