The Volkswagen’s ID Buzz concept that was unveiled at Detroit earlier this year had sparked off nostalgia across the world, bringing back memories of the adorable Microbus. The modern concept has received such a positive response that the German carmaker has decided to bring it into production.
The ID Buzz concept seems to be the perfect family van in an era where all MPVs are trying hard to be pseudo-SUVs. While the ID Buzz harks back to the retro styling of the 50s, it is all tech underneath. The ID Buzz is an all-electric vehicle and sits on the modular electric platform with a 3.3-metre wheelbase. The eight seat layout is flexible and with the batteries and motors sitting under the floor, it opens up more space to stow away luggage as well.
The ID Buzz gets an all-wheel drive system where the four hub motors with a combined output of 369bhp are synchronised electronically. It claims a 0-100kmph dash in under five seconds with the top-speed limited to 160kmph. The ID Buzz will come with a range of over 400kms going up to a maximum of 550kms depending upon the trim you opt for.
While the concept is autonomously driven, the production car might get a dedicated cockpit with a familiar steering if its launch is expedited.
