Volkswagen launched the much anticipated Tiguan in India with a price tag of ₹ 27.98 lakh for Comfortline trim and ₹ 31.38 lakh for Highline trim (ex-showroom Delhi). The second-generation Tiguan made its global debut in 2015 and made its Indian appearance at the 2016 Delhi Expo. The Tiguan now becomes the new flagship offering from the German carmaker in India. Let’s have a detailed look at the all-new Tiguan through our photo gallery.
The Tiguan looks understated and classy. Although not a full-blown SUV, it has a certain charm to it which few cars manage to carry. It sports the Volkswagen’s familiar SUV styling wherever you look.
There are LED headlamps up front with DRLs, the grille is double louvered with a hint of chrome highlights. The bumper is simple yet functional with chrome lining, black cladding and cornering lights.
The black cladding continues on the side, and there’s a sharp shoulder crease typical of German cars. The roof railing adds a character to the soft SUV. The 18-inch alloys are standard on Highline trim.
The LED tail lights are sharp and wraparound. The chrome lining runs across with black cladding as well. The tailgate is electric with an easy-open function and adjustable opening angle with memory.
Based on the MQB platform, the Tiguan measures 4,486mm in length is 1,839mm wide and 1,632mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,682mm. The ground clearance is only 149mm though. Boot space is 615 litres/1655 litres.
Step inside, and the understated feel continues. The cabin is filled with a brim for a car at this price range. There are six airbags, ISOFIX, smartphone compatible infotainment system.
There are a plethora of driving and safety aids - the ABS, ESC, hill ascent/hill hold function, cruise control, TPMS, brake assist, lane assist departure warning system and pedestrian monitoring as standard fitment.
The self-sealing tyres are a special highlight in the Tiguan. The bonnet, on the other hand, comes with pedestrian protection. The panoramic sunroof is offered in Highline trim only.
Under the hood is just one engine option. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI engine producing 142bhp at 4,200rpm and 340Nm from as low as 1,750rpm. The transmission option is just a seven-speed DSG transmission automatic.
The 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system is standard, while there are four driving modes to choose from – Normal, Snow, Off-road, and Off-road Individual. There is also an ECO drive function as standard.
The Tiguan can be had in five body colour. The black Vienna leather upholstery comes as standard. There is a host of accessories and optional fitments available from the carmaker.
The Tiguan is gunning for the likes of BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3 in the Indian car market. With the SUV gaining immense popularity, the German giant wants a piece of cake as well.
The Tiguan is the first MQB platform based SUV to be introduced in India, and we hope to see more following suit. The Tiguan offers a sensible package for someone looking for an understated crossover for the budget of a D+ segment sedan.
