Volkswagen marks its re-entry in the trending SUV segment in India with the launch of much anticipated Tiguan crossover SUV at a price tag of ₹27.98 (ex-showroom Delhi). The Tiguan is launched in two trims – Comfortline and Highline. Volkswagen has introduced the Tiguan with just one diesel engine option and an automatic transmission.
The five-seater Tiguan carries the understated Volkswagen family face. The louvered grille is surrounded with square-ish headlamps with integrated LED strip. Based on the versatile MQB platform, the Tiguan measures 4,486mm in length, is 1,839mm wide and 1,632mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,682mm. The flared wheel arches with black cladding all around, coupled with roof rails and dash of chrome on the fascia add character to the sporty SUV. At the back, the wraparound yet sharp horizontal LED tail lamp with new roof spoiler adds to the appeal. The crossover rides on stylish 18-inch alloy wheels (in the Highline trim).
Step inside and you are welcomed with a premium and well laid out cabin. The centre console is dominated by a large infotainment screen and a plethora of buttons and controls. There are steering mounted controls with multi-informative instrument cluster. Both the Comfortline and Highline trims gets three-zone automatic air-conditioning with rear controls, electrically adjustable front seats with driver memory function, automatic headlamp and cruise control as standard fitment. The Highline trim, however, gets additional panoramic sunroof, illuminated scuff plates, ambient lighting and keyless entry with a push-button start.
Under the hood of the new Tiguan is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI engine from the recently launched A4 35TDI, which belts out 142bhp at 4,000rpm and 340Nm from as low as 1,750rpm. The transmission option is just a seven-speed DSG transmission automatic.
As far as safety is concerned, the Tiguan gets ABS with EBD, dual front, front side and curtain airbags, rain sensors, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system and front and rear park distance control, automatic post-collision braking system, city emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring and lane assist departure warning system as standard fitment. The top-spec Highline variant gets two additional features – self-sealing tyres and a reverse parking camera.
The Tiguan now becomes the flagship SUV in the German manufacturer’s Indian portfolio. The crossover goes up against the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and the BMW X1. At this price point, the Tiguan becomes an important vehicle for VW, especially since the SUV body style is gaining immense popularity these days amongst Indian car buyers. It will be manufactured at the carmaker’s Aurangabad facility.
