Volkswagen is on an SUV offensive with a desire to have a high riding vehicle in every segment that exists. So below the recently launched T-Roc will be another crossover which will be based on the Polo platform. The newest crossover was spotted undergoing snow weather testing in December last year. And now, the latest images from China show us the characteristic VW lines of the crossover with a glimpse of the interior.
According to reports, Volkswagen has registered the “Tharu” moniker for the new crossover in the South American market. The impending T-Cross could be the crossover which would adopt the Tharu name in the markets of Brazil, Argentina and China. The same spec model could also make its way to India given that ours is also an RHD market like the others. It could even be manufactured in the country as well next to the Tiguan.
The T Cross (or Tharu) will follow the new VW family design. The body creases and squared off headlights can be seen in the images along with the Karoq and Tiguan-styled tail lights. There are roof rails to add to the rugged appearance along with black body cladding all around. On the inside, there is a large screen on the centre console of an all-black dashboard. With the MQB-A underpinning, the T Cross will be spacious, easy to build and have the same powertrain as the other cars it shares the versatile platform with. So expect a 1.4-litre or 1.5-litre TSI motor with either a manual or seven-speed DSG transmission powering the new crossover.
When it arrives in India sometime next year, the new compact SUV will take on the fight against the established players like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Mahindra TUV300, Honda WR-V, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport. The growing SUV demands will help the German carmaker with the sales if the pricing is competitive enough.
