The clan of hot hatchbacks is expected to get a new member by the end of next month and this time it is a diesel, yes we are talking about the Polo GT TDI. It had earlier been spotted testing outside of Pune in May sans camouflage. It shares the same understated looks with its petrol twin which has become a surprising success and is believed to have over 400 orders pending.
The engine on the GT TDI is expected to be the 1.6-litre diesel engine from the Vento sedan. This oil burner in the Vento produces 104.4PS, 250Nm of torque. The hatchback weighs significantly lesser and so the performance figures should be quite decent to give it the tag of a hot hatchback. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.
As we had said earlier, the Polo GT TDI will only be identifiable by the GT badges as it is expected to have even the same alloy wheels as the standard Polo and petrol GT TSI. In terms of interiors too we expect that it will exactly the same as the GT TSI obviously sans the seven-speed DSG.
The car, when launched, will join other sporty diesel hatchbacks like the Fiat Punto Sport and the Indica Vista D90. This is the fourth vehicle to be launched on the Polo design after the standard Polo, the Vento sedan, the Polo GT TSI and more recently the Cross polo crossover. Due to the premium that diesels command, we expect this vehicle to be priced between Rs 8 lakh to Rs 9 lakh and will mostly be launched around the end of September.
