Volkswagen plan on entering the sub-four-metre compact sedan space with the Polo-based sedan. Recently, compact sedans were spotted testing on the NH-4 near Pune. Volkswagen has codenamed the compact sedan as the ICS, and the car will majorly be a Volkswagen Polo with additional boot space.
It will be mechanically identical to the Polo, using the 74bhp 1.2-litre MPi three-cylinder petrol engine and the 89bhp 1.5-litre TDI four-cylinder diesel engine. It is unsure whether Volkswagen India will option it with the GT variant petrol and diesel engines. If they do, the highest variant will feature the 103bhp 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine with the 7-speed DSG.
The highest variant will also feature cruise-control, climate-control, 15-inch alloy wheels and steering-mounted controls for the infotainment system. ABS and dual front airbags will likely be standard on all variants.
The car will go up against the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Figo Aspire. Volkswagen India will have to price the car competitively to enter the established market. It will be showcased at the Auto Expo in February 2016 and will go on sale a few months after.
