Volkswagen has told reporters about the company’s intent to launch two new SUVs before the year 2020. These new vehicles will reportedly sell alongside its Tiguan and Atlas, in a bid to strengthen their product portfolio in the popular compact and midsize crossover segments.
Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen North America, said, “We easily can bring a second midsize SUV and a second compact SUV into the market. These will sell beside the Atlas and the Tiguan. We are doubling up in these strong segments.”
Although Woebcken confirmed that both SUVs will be built on the MQB modular platform that underpins the Golf, Tiguan, and Atlas, he pressed that the new upcoming SUVs would not be electrified as of now. VW sited the sales in these segments growing exponentially in some markets, thanks to strong demand, which in-turn made sense to them to expand its line-up in these classes.
We’ll just have to wait and watch to see if these fresh offerings will create a niche that’s strong enough for the carmaker to introduce it in markets such as ours. Stay tuned for more information.
