Just days after it was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Volkswagen Phideon has been spotted sans camouflage on tarmac in China. It is a new luxury sedan designed and built for the Chinese market and will slot in above the Passat replacing the Phaeton sedan.
The Phideon sedan in that typical VW way is understated by being extremely premium looking. The noticeable VW elements include the front grille, strong shoulder lines and the design of the tail lamps. There are no pictures of the cabin but it is safe to assume that most of the trim will come from existing VW cars but obviously with the premium factor raised to help differentiate it from the other models.
It will be offered in China with a 3.0-litre V6 petrol and a 2.0-litre petrol mill. The former will be offered with AWD while the latter is expected to make do with FWD. There is also a plug-in hybrid model being planned for the future. It is expected to go on sale in August and will be priced around Rs 36 lakh in the Chinese market.
It seems possible that VW may get this car to other markets next year and India is likely to be one of them. Our market will also get it with the option of a diesel mill which is likely to be the 3.0-litre V6 also found in the current A6.
