Volkswagen launched the 2017 Golf in South Africa at an introductory price of R289,900 (Rs 14.12 lakh) for the Treadline variant. The top of the line GTI variant is priced at R545,800 (Rs 26.58 lakh).
The manufacturer has introduced the 2017 Golf with three variants on offer; Treadline, Comfortline and the GTI. The facelift for the standard variants includes restyled bumpers and DRL inserts in the headlamp assembly. The standard variants are offered with an ‘R-Line’ package with some exterior modifications. However, the GTI variant gets a full LED headlamp with dual-projector assembly and a full LED tail lamp unit. The GTI also gets sporty designed lower grille on the front bumper, dual chrome-finished exhaust tips and 18-inch ‘Milton Keynes’ alloy wheels as cosmetics changes.
Interior updates include 6.5 inch touch screen for the standard variant and the 8 inch infotainment system in the GTI. A 9.2 inch navigation system has been offered as an option in the GTI. USB, Bluetooth connectivity and eight speakers are standard features on offer across all variants.
The engines on offer are the 1.0TSI and the 1.4TSI depending on the standard variant opted. The former one produces 108bhp and 200Nm of torque and the latter one is capable of producing 124bhp with 200Nm of torque. Both these engines are mated to a six speed manual transmission with an optional seven speed DSG gearbox for the 1.4TSI. Whereas the GTI is offered with a more powerful drive train of 2.0TSI with a six speed DSG gearbox capable of churning out the 226bhp and 350Nm of torque.
Volkswagen intends to attract a wider market with much variety on offer in terms of engine, features and style.
