In a bid to expand its environmentally friendly line up of vehicles, Volkswagen UK has introduced the Golf GTE, a plug-in hybrid version of the brand’s renowned family hatchback. Volkswagen says that the name GTE reflects its standing in the range alongside the petrol-powered Golf GTI and diesel Golf GTD.
The Gold GTE plug-in hybrid is driven by two engines: a 150bhp, 1.4-litre TSI direct-injection petrol engine and a 102bhp electric motor. Volkswagen is claiming a maximum power output of 205bhp and a maximum torque of 350Nm. The brand’s 6-speed DSG gearbox developed for hybrid vehicles is fitted as standard.
The vehicle has a theoretical range of 580miles (930 kilometres), making it quite a long distance cruiser. With the petrol engine engaged as well, the Golf GTE can sprint from zero to 100kmph in 7.6 seconds and on to a top speed of well over 200kmph. Who says plug-in hybrids cannot be deemed fun?
