The Volkswagen Group, as we have known, entered India with a long term strategy and firm focus on the domestic Indian market. The auto giant has been gradually increasing the level of localisation of the models produced at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune.
Further deepening its production operations in India, Volkswagen India has announced that it has invested in a new diesel engine assembly line and testing facility in Chakan. With this, the automaker will further increase the local content in the vehicles produced at this plant. First of the engines to be assembled at the new assembly line is the all-new 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine which powers the facelifted Polo. The brand has revealed that the assembly of the 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine is scheduled to commence at the end of 2014.
The new engine assembly line will be integrated into the existing structure of the manufacturing facility. Volkswagen has revealed that over 260 additional direct jobs will be created in the plant alone, not counting the additional jobs created at the Indian suppliers who will be producing and supplying certain parts and components for this engine in India. The new line can assemble over 98,000 engines in a three-shift-system at full capacity. The locally assembled engine will be used in the recently launched Polo and the Polo GT TDI.
