Volkswagen India has accelerated the volume of cars being exported globally and plans to increase its presence in North America. Considering Mexico to be the biggest export market it recently started shipping the left-hand driven Vento there this October.
Volkswagen India started exporting vehicles from its Pune-based manufacturing facility in 2011. The Polo and the Vento are being exported to 32 countries across the globe. Mahesh Kodumudi, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India said, "The total units exported so far from Pune is over 27,000 units as of October 2013. Almost every second car from the export volumes is going to Mexico currently. The biggest export market for Volkswagen India is currently Mexico."
In 2012 about 96,000 cars were manufactured at the Pune facility and approximately a similar amount of cars are expected to be produced by this year end. Depending on the demand from the market this figure might however change. Currently, 20 percent of Volkswagen’s manufacturing plant at Pune is reserved for production of cars to be exported. Kodumudi claims the company is ready for the increase in demand of vehicles. He also added that there are no immediate plans for export of other products from their portfolio and no new car markets have been presently targeted after Mexico.
