- A production-ready prototype of the ID4 electric crossover is teased in disguised
- Volkswagen’s electrification plans also revealed
Volkswagen has showcased a production-ready prototype of the upcoming ID4 electric crossover at the special event in China. The ID4 will be the second product under the German carmaker’s electric sub-brand after the ID3 hatchback and will first debut in the Chinese market. Apart from the ID, China-specific models like the Viloran and Tacqua were also showcased.
The ID4 was first previewed back in 2017 as the I.D. Crozz concept. It shares almost everything with the recently revealed ID3 hatchback in terms of styling and powertrain. However, the ID4 is a high-riding vehicle with an SUV stance and dimensions matching that of the VW Tiguan. However, this battery-powered SUV would offer more space inside the cabin, along with many new-age features and equipment. We expect the same electric powertrain for the ID4 as the ID3. This would include three battery options to choose from – 45kWh, 60kWh and 77 kWh offering a range between 330km to 550km.
Volkswagen also presented the MEB roadmap – their electrification plans based on the EV platform. The carmaker aims to sell around three lakh electric vehicles by next year in China alone. And by 2025, the sales target of EV is set at 10 lakh. By 2023, Volkswagen will have 10 MEB-based electric cars in the Chinese market. Production of the ID3 is slated to commence by the end of 2020 in China and the ID4 will closely follow.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the ocean, Volkswagen will be showcasing an all-new ID Concept on 19 November. To be showcased at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, this unnamed ID Concept will also focus on the brand’s electric future.
