- Seventh entrant in the ID family previews a station wagon
- Will have a range of 480 kilometres
As a part of its electrification push, Volkswagen is expanding its ID electric sub-brand. Since its inception in 2017, the German giant has already showcased six concepts – two of which are production-ready – and now there’s a seventh one coming. Teased here in a design sketch, the newest ID Concept is called ‘Space Vizzion’ and it is Volkswagen’s take on a future electric station wagon. It will be showcased at the upcoming 2019 Los Angeles Motor Show.
Volkswagen describes the ID Space Vizzion as a “crossover of tomorrow that combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV”. But we reckon it to be the practical, high-riding and rugged version of the Vizzion Concept showcased last year. Based on the same MEB platform, even the styling is carried over albeit the roofline runs to the back and the lighting signatures are slightly different.
On the inside, the carmaker claims a completely digitised cockpit with new-age materials made from sustainable raw materials, such as the new AppleSkin—a vegan alternative to leather. In the teaser images, there are four captain seats inside the futuristic-looking cabin, since there’s a large tunnel running along with the centre console. Under the skin, we suspect the similar powertrain as seen on the other ID Concept and a claimed electric range of 300 miles (around 480 kilometres).
We will surely see a road-going version of the ID Vizzion Space Concept, but that will happen in 2021, confirms the carmaker. Ahead of that, the ID3 hatchback – which has already hit the production line – will go on sale promptly followed by the ID4 crossover. Interestingly, Volkswagen says that the Vizzion Space will come in different versions for different markets of North America, Europe and China.
