The Volkswagen Cross Polo has been spotted sans camouflage and is likely to be launched for the Indian market very soon. The Cross Polo is basically a beefed up version of the standard Polo hatchback and has features very similar to that of the Skoda Fabia Scout with which its shares common underpinnings.
In terms of design, the Cross Polo gets a black or silver body kit depending on the colour of the car, chunky tyres and taller wheels in a bid to make the car seem larger. Also parts of the package are roof rails and most likely on the petrol models a spare tyre on the rear hatch.
The car that has been snapped is the TDI version which is powered by a 1.2-litre oil burner that produces 76PS and 180Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. While the body kit and raised ground clearance give the car a muscular appearance, it likely they will add a significant amount of weight to car and this is expected to affect performance of the vehicle significantly.
We expect that VW will also launch a petrol version which will make use of the 1.2-litre turbocharged mill from the GT TSI. The interiors of the Cross Polo are expected to be exactly the same as the standard car with no changes to anything in the cabin.
The Cross Polo is expected to give VW an instant entry into to the rapidly expanding crossover market. In terms of price, we expect that Volkswagen will price the Cross Polo at least Rs 40, 000 to Rs 50, 000 more than the standard car.
